Center Information & Reminders

Field trips- The Friday Field trip schedule can be found on the right sidebar of this blog. Each Friday, scholars will be attending various locations throughout the city. Parents, if you would like to join us please contact me or Ms. Moraya to let us know so that we can add you to our list. I encourage all parents to join us if you have the time or desire to come. All scholars who are in summer school must be at Center by 9 am to attend Friday Field trips. If scholars are not at Center by that time then they will not be permitted to attend. As a reminder, all scholars are expected to complete, and be in possession of their field trip checklist each Friday. Lastly, parents please make sure to wash and return t-shirts that scholars took home on Friday.

Curriculum update- If your scholars are in the 5th or 8th grade, they are required to do a science fair project. Please check-in with them about this project as they are currently in the beginning stages of planning their projects and experiments. Ask them about their hypothesis and inquire about their actual experiments. Scholars will need a lot of support inside and outside of Center to complete these.

Portfolios- Ward 6 is one of two Higher Achievement Centers piloting an academic portfolio for our scholars. All scholars will be required to create a portfolio of their work. Though scholars can bring in their own binders and portfolio books, most scholars will house their work in the rear of their binder. Portfolio days are every Tuesday morning from 8:30 to 9am in the scholar’s homeroom. Please review the portfolio materials and support scholars in organizing their portfolios.

Weekly Challenges- Each week, a challenge is posed to the scholars. This challenge will connect to our community meeting topic and provide scholars with the opportunity to further engage the topics we discuss. If a scholar does not complete the challenge within the week, but would still like to try they can do so if their parent completes one as well. I encourage all parents to support and challenge the scholars to complete the challenges weekly.

Week Two Challenge: Any scholar who can write a 1 page paper on the “struggle for freedom” will get 10 SPARC chips. The paper must detail the challenges of the people and the means by which they fought for freedom. Lastly, it must be typed and edited by your literature teacher.

Week three challenge: Any scholar who can write a 1 pg paper on the importance of education to your life. How does education fit into the goals you have set for your life? How will it help you to meet your goals in the future? What educational plans do you have for yourself?

New documents uploaded (Monday): field trip checklist, field trip schedule, and portfolio description and checklist.
