Science Fair-This week is the Science Fair. All 5th and 8th grade scholars are required to complete a Science Fair project. Please check with your scholars to ask if they need any final materials to complete their project. Also if you would like to stop by and participate in or judge the science fair, please e-mail me. The Science Fair will be held in the cafeteria on Wednesday July 29, 2009 at 10 am. I encourage parents to attend.
Portfolios- There has been some questions about scholar portfolios. It’s been challenging for me to scan the portfolio description document at Center, however I should have it up by Monday. Portfolios (at minimum) will be a tab located in the scholars Center Binder, however, they can be in a binder all their own. The goal of the portfolio is to create a visual representation of their academic achievements as they progress through Higher Achievement; this summer is merely the beginning. The three works that we detailed in the scholar checklist are as follows;
-A work that you are most proud of
-A piece of work that has been re-written and improved through the writing process
-A work that relates to one of our social justice pillars (Freedom, Voice, Solidarity, Freedom) as an example, last week I asked the scholars to create an acrostic about Solidarity.
CNN Special- Parents, there is an awesome special on CNN called Black in America 2. It’s a very eye opening and interesting look at the challenges black youth face around the globe. I think it’s a very hopeful and inspiring message for all, not just blacks/ African Americans. This would be a great thing to watch and talk about with your scholars if you are so inclined.
