This summer was filled with memorable moments, and opportunities to grow. I will never forget leading the Ward 6 Achievement Center onto the floor to do our chant together at Olympics of the Mind. I watched the 8th grade scholars create, teach, and lead in the facilitation of this chant, and they deserve to enjoy the feeling of success for all of the work they exhibited. We also had our first-ever Food Creation Competition. Watching homerooms collaborate to create and prepare food dishes was inspiring; scholars collaborated to create dishes they were proud of, and learned a lot in the process. As we concluded the summer, the Science Fair provided another opportunity for scholars to stand up and be proud of their work. It was a rewarding experience for them to answer scientific questions and create “Rube Goldberg” machines. The scholars earned everything they achieved this summer; thank you to them for their hard work, and to all of the families for your un-ending support.
This summer there were also opportunities for growth. I watched our 5th graders grow and learn, while becoming part of our Higher Achievement community. Our 6th graders pushed through the rigors of Summer Academy and learned to collaborate with each other. The 7th graders continued to grow into future leaders, while strengthening their solidarity. The 8th graders are our leaders; many of them found their voice this summer as they stepped forward to facilitate learning opportunities for themselves and others. All of the scholars worked very hard to prepare themselves socially through taking risks, and trying new things. Academically, scholars were pushed to challenge themselves in their work, to have a positive attitude, and to be thoughtful in their work. Scholars were pushed to be accountable, and they were.
