Welcome Back

Thank you all for attending our Back to School event on Wednesday; it was great to see all of you and feel the inspiring energy that you brought. I look forward to the year to come and to celebrating all of our scholars on their journey through middle school, towards High School, and beyond. We no doubt will have many challenges, as well as memorable moments, but I look forward to overcoming them with all of you. Thank again, and I encourage all of you continue to stay engaged with us through all of the ups and downs; we are here to help. Welcome back everyone!

Summer Academy Thank You Letter

This summer was filled with memorable moments, and opportunities to grow. I will never forget leading the Ward 6 Achievement Center onto the floor to do our chant together at Olympics of the Mind. I watched the 8th grade scholars create, teach, and lead in the facilitation of this chant, and they deserve to enjoy the feeling of success for all of the work they exhibited. We also had our first-ever Food Creation Competition. Watching homerooms collaborate to create and prepare food dishes was inspiring; scholars collaborated to create dishes they were proud of, and learned a lot in the process. As we concluded the summer, the Science Fair provided another opportunity for scholars to stand up and be proud of their work. It was a rewarding experience for them to answer scientific questions and create “Rube Goldberg” machines. The scholars earned everything they achieved this summer; thank you to them for their hard work, and to all of the families for your un-ending support.

This summer there were also opportunities for growth. I watched our 5th graders grow and learn, while becoming part of our Higher Achievement community. Our 6th graders pushed through the rigors of Summer Academy and learned to collaborate with each other. The 7th graders continued to grow into future leaders, while strengthening their solidarity. The 8th graders are our leaders; many of them found their voice this summer as they stepped forward to facilitate learning opportunities for themselves and others. All of the scholars worked very hard to prepare themselves socially through taking risks, and trying new things. Academically, scholars were pushed to challenge themselves in their work, to have a positive attitude, and to be thoughtful in their work. Scholars were pushed to be accountable, and they were.

Center News

Congratulations to Jordan Person. Jordan won the Higher Achievement Regional Spelling Bee & Spell-off. After four years of hard work and perseverance, this year, Jordan claimed the trophy. Congrats to him and the Person family.

Staffing Changes- We are in the process of re-structuring study halls as Mr. Chantz and Ms. Lourdes have moved on to other opportunities. In the coming weeks you’ll be receiving communications from your scholar’s new (or returning) Achievement Coach. Please welcome them and communicate with them to ensure continued success for our scholars.

Mid-Year Party trip- This upcoming week, I’ll be meeting with the scholars to plan our mid-year trip. In the past scholars have gone skating, ice skating, to the movies, etc… Scholars this year have also expressed an interest in having a party at Center. Ideally, this would occur on an off-Center night or weekend day, if it was a field trip. I’ll keep you informed of the scholars’ final preferences in relation to this event.
